Months Between Dates Calculator

Calculate complete calendar months between two dates, plus remaining days. Handles different month lengths, month-end dates, and leap years.

Last updated: July 2026

The end date must be on or after the start date.

Complete calendar-month convention

Whole months advance from the original start day. If that day does not exist in the destination month, it is clamped to the month's final valid day.

How complete months between two dates are calculated

The calculator finds how many whole calendar-month steps can be added to the start date without passing the end date. It then reports calendar days remaining between that complete-month anchor and the end date.

Start date + complete calendar months + remaining calendar days = end date

How are month-end dates handled?

If the original day number does not exist in the destination month, the calculator uses that month's last valid day. January 31, 2026 plus one calendar month therefore becomes February 28, 2026. In leap year 2024, January 31 plus one month becomes February 29. Both ranges count as one complete month.

Why not just divide the days by 30?

Calendar months vary: February has 28 or 29 days, while other months have 30 or 31. Dividing total days by 30 or 30.44 produces an approximation rather than a count of complete calendar months. This calculator advances through actual Gregorian calendar months.

Calendar months versus billing periods

This result measures calendar duration using the stated month-end convention. A contract, subscription, loan, payroll system, or provider may use different billing cycles, anniversary dates, proration, boundary counting, or end-of-month rules. This arithmetic does not determine contractual or legal obligations.

Worked examples

Exact complete months

January 15, 2026 to April 15, 2026 is 3 complete months with 0 remaining days.

One day short

January 15 to April 14 has a three-month candidate anchor of April 15, which is too late. The result is 2 complete months + 30 days, anchored at March 15.

Non-leap month-end clamp

January 31, 2026 plus one month clamps to February 28, so January 31 through February 28 is 1 complete month.

Leap-year month end

January 31, 2024 through February 29, 2024 is 1 complete month under the same clamping rule.

Leap-day anniversary

February 29, 2024 plus 12 months clamps to February 28, 2025. The result is 12 complete months, or 1 year.

Months plus remaining days

January 10, 2025 through March 15, 2026 is 14 complete months + 5 days, equivalent to 1 year + 2 months + 5 days.

Same date

July 30, 2026 through July 30, 2026 is 0 complete months and 0 remaining days.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate complete months between two dates?

Count whole calendar-month steps from the start without passing the end, then report remaining calendar days separately.

Is a month always 30 days in this calculator?

No. The calculation uses actual calendar months and their real lengths.

Does January 31 to February 28 count as one month?

Yes under this calculator's explicit rule. When the original day is unavailable, the date is clamped to the destination month's final valid day.

Does the calculator handle leap years?

Yes. February 29 and Gregorian leap-year month lengths are handled with UTC calendar arithmetic.

What happens if the end date is before the start date?

The calculator asks for an end date on or after the start date. It does not silently reverse the dates.

Is this the same as total days divided by 30?

No. Dividing by 30 is approximate and does not count complete calendar months.
