How is FedEx dimensional weight calculated?
For the current FedEx U.S. preset, convert measurements to inches, round each dimension to the nearest whole inch, multiply length × width × height, and divide the cubic-inch volume by 139. A fractional result is rounded up to the next whole pound for this package-level planning estimate.
FedEx DIM weight = rounded length × rounded width × rounded height ÷ 139.

An 18 × 14 × 10-inch box has a volume of 2,520 cubic inches. Dividing 2,520 by 139 gives about 18.13 pounds, producing a rounded dimensional weight of 19 pounds.
Does FedEx use actual weight or dimensional weight?
FedEx compares dimensional weight with actual package weight for rating and can use the greater applicable weight. This calculator rounds actual weight up to a whole-pound comparison basis, then identifies which value is higher. Final rated weight remains subject to current FedEx service and account rules.
Why can dimensional weight be higher?
Dimensional weight represents the transportation space a package occupies relative to its physical weight. A large, lightweight box can therefore have a higher DIM weight than its scale weight. When DIM weight is higher, reducing unused box volume may reduce the dimensional result.
