How is UPS dimensional weight calculated?
DIM weight = Rounded length × Rounded width × Rounded height ÷ DIM divisor. For the current U.S. presets, Daily Rates use 139 and Retail Rates use 166. A fractional dimensional weight is increased to the next whole pound; an exact whole-pound result is not increased again.
Why does UPS use 139 or 166?
UPS U.S. dimensional-weight guidance uses different divisors depending on the applicable rate basis. Daily Rates use 139 in this calculator, while Retail Rates use 166. A smaller divisor produces a higher DIM weight for the same box. Select the rate type that applies to your shipment; this tool does not determine contract eligibility.
Does UPS use actual or dimensional weight?
UPS generally compares rounded package weight with dimensional weight and uses the greater applicable weight when determining billable weight. Final billed weight can also depend on service-specific rules, minimums, shipment characteristics, account terms, and carrier corrections.
Why are package dimensions rounded?
The U.S. UPS preset calculation converts measurements to inches, rounds each dimension to the nearest whole inch, and only then multiplies. For example, 12.4 × 10.4 × 8.4 inches becomes 12 × 10 × 8 inches. A measurement ending in .5 rounds upward.
Metric inputs and U.S. scope
Centimeters are converted using exactly 1 inch = 2.54 cm before whole-inch rounding. Kilograms are converted using 1 kg = 2.2046226218487757 lb before actual-weight ceiling. This calculator targets U.S. UPS presets; other origins and markets can use different rules or divisors.
