How much money do I need to move into an apartment?

Total move-in cost = Rent due upfront + deposits + required fees + other apartment charges + moving and setup costs. If savings are entered, the calculator subtracts them from the final total, including any optional selected buffer.

How is prorated rent calculated?

With the actual-days method, daily rent equals monthly rent divided by the calendar days in the move-in month. Prorated rent equals that unrounded daily amount multiplied by the rent days remaining, including move-in day.

For example, $1,860 ÷ 30 days is $62 per day. An April 16 move-in includes 15 days, producing $930.

Actual-days versus 30-day proration

Leases may use actual calendar days, a 30-day convention, or another method. In this calculator’s 30-day convention, day 16 produces 15 charged days; dates on day 31 are treated as one charged day. Use Custom amount when your property provides an exact figure.

Lease and local-rule note

Deposit limits, fees, prepaid-rent rules, and proration methods differ by jurisdiction, property, and lease. This calculator does not determine legality. Check your lease or property manager’s move-in statement for exact amounts.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need to move into an apartment?

Add rent due at move-in, deposits, fees, and moving/setup costs. The calculator totals these entries.

Is first month’s rent included?

Choose Full month when it is due, Prorated for a partial month, or Custom amount for the property’s exact figure.

How do I calculate prorated rent?

One common method divides monthly rent by days in the month and multiplies by remaining rent days including move-in day.

Must I pay first month, last month, and a deposit?

Not necessarily. Requirements vary. Enter only the amounts applicable to your move-in.

Are application fees included?

Only when entered. Leave an already-paid fee at zero if it should not remain in the budget.

What other costs should I consider?

Possible items include movers, utilities, internet, insurance, pet charges, household items, and cleaning supplies.

Does this determine whether a fee is legal?

No. It performs arithmetic only.

Can I see how much more I need to save?

Yes. Enter money already set aside to see the remaining need or amount above the estimate.
