YouTube Upload Time Calculator
Calculate how long a YouTube video will take to upload from its file size and your internet upload speed, or find the Mbps needed to finish within a target time.
Last updated: July 2026
YouTube processing time: Not included. After upload, YouTube still processes and transcodes the video. That server-side time varies and is separate from this network transfer estimate.

How long will a YouTube upload take?
Upload time = File size in bits ÷ Upload speed in bits per second. A 5 GB decimal file contains 40,000 megabits. At 50 Mbps, the ideal transfer time is 800 seconds, or 13 minutes 20 seconds.
Why is there a practical estimate?
Real transfers may not sustain a speed-test result because of network overhead, Wi-Fi variation, congestion, competing traffic, or connection changes. The default 90% utilization is a convenience assumption, not a claim about YouTube. At 50 Mbps it models 45 Mbps effective throughput, making the 5 GB example approximately 14 minutes 49 seconds.
Should I enter upload or download speed?
Enter upload speed. Uploading sends the video from your device to YouTube, and many internet connections provide substantially less upload bandwidth than download bandwidth.
Mbps versus MB/s
Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second. Eight bits equal one byte, so 80 Mbps is approximately 10 MB/s before overhead.
Why isn't YouTube processing time included?
Network transfer time can be calculated from file size and upload bandwidth. YouTube processing depends on resolution, codec, frame rate, duration, server workload, and output-quality encodes. Assigning it a fixed multiplier would create false precision, so processing time is intentionally excluded.
YouTube upload limits and source
YouTube currently states a maximum upload of 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Accounts are limited to videos up to 15 minutes by default; verified accounts can upload longer videos within the published maximum.
YouTube upload-limit information verified July 31, 2026. See YouTube Help — Upload videos longer than 15 minutes. Platform limits can change.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to upload a video to YouTube?
It depends mainly on file size and upload speed. Enter both for an ideal and practical transfer estimate.
How long does 10 GB take at 100 Mbps?
The ideal continuous-speed transfer is about 13 minutes 20 seconds. Real transfers may take longer.
Do I use upload or download speed?
Use upload speed because your device is sending the file.
Is Mbps the same as MB/s?
No. Mbps is megabits per second; MB/s is megabytes per second. Eight bits equal one byte.
Does this include YouTube processing time?
No. It estimates network upload time only.
What is the largest video I can upload?
YouTube currently states 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less.
Why can I upload only 15 minutes?
Longer videos require account verification, subject to the current maximum limits.
What upload speed do I need for 30 minutes?
Use Speed needed mode and enter the file size and target duration.
