How is college GPA calculated?
Quality points = Course credits x Grade points. Semester GPA equals total quality points divided by total GPA-bearing credits. A 4-credit A- worth 3.7 contributes 14.8 quality points.
How is cumulative GPA updated?
Previous GPA is converted back into quality points by multiplying current GPA by completed GPA credits. The semester's raw quality points and credits are then added before dividing, so the calculation never depends on a rounded semester GPA.
What GPA do I need this semester?
The target mode calculates how many semester quality points are needed for old and upcoming credits together to reach the selected cumulative GPA. It compares the result with the maximum grade point in your customized scale.
Institutional policies differ
The default is a common 4.0 scale, not a universal standard. Transfer, pass/fail, repeated, withdrawn, incomplete, audit, and remedial courses may be treated differently. This calculator does not model grade replacement; enter only credits and grades your institution includes in GPA.

Do classes with more credits affect GPA more?
Yes. GPA is credit-weighted rather than a simple average of course grades.
Does a Pass grade affect GPA?
This calculator excludes P, S, W, I, and Audit options by default. Check your institution's policy.
Does an F count toward GPA?
Yes. It adds zero quality points while its credits remain in the GPA denominator.
