How to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit
Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5, then add 32:
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
For example, 25 × 9/5 = 45, then 45 + 32 = 77. Therefore, 25°C equals 77°F. The converter retains the entered value's full precision until the result is formatted.
Why Celsius and Fahrenheit are not a simple ratio
The scales have different zero points, so multiplying Celsius by 1.8 is not enough. The 32-degree offset is required: 0°C equals 32°F, not 0°F.
The −40 crossover
−40°C equals −40°F. This is the one temperature where the two scales have the same numerical value. Setting Celsius equal to Fahrenheit in the conversion formula gives −40.
Where Celsius-to-Fahrenheit conversion is useful
Temperature conversion is commonly useful when comparing weather reports, cooking and oven temperatures, travel information, science or education material, and everyday measurements that use different temperature scales.
Worked examples
0°C
0 × 9/5 + 32 = 32°F.
20°C
20 × 9/5 + 32 = 36 + 32 = 68°F.
37°C
37 × 9/5 + 32 = 66.6 + 32 = 98.6°F.
−10°C
−10 × 9/5 + 32 = −18 + 32 = 14°F.
−40°C
The crossover temperature converts to −40°F.
100°C
100 × 9/5 + 32 = 212°F.
Decimal input: 18.5°C
18.5 × 1.8 + 32 = 33.3 + 32 = 65.3°F.
